Dr. Kai Welp has served as head of GEMA's legal department and General Counsel since 2024.

There, he is primarily responsible for AI matters, including lawsuits filed against well-known AI companies.

Previously, he worked as a department head in the legal department.

Before joining GEMA, he worked for the national radio station, the German Research Network (Deutsches Forschungsnetz e.V.), and as a research assistant at the Institute for Information, Telecommunications and Media Law in Münster.
