The Past Is Not A Quiet Place: Finding Inspiration In Obsolete Gear And Lost Techniques

A keynote from HAINBACH, followed by an open audience AMA.

„Press articles made it out that the music of the future was created there. When you visited, you saw people riveting sine waves together“. When you have just one oscillator you lifted from the radio department and two tape machines to create the music of the future, you have no choice but to become creative. In the 1950s and 60s, musical innovation happened by misappropriating testing equipment to attempt to break new grounds in music. While today these processes may seem arduous and primitive, a deeper look into the techniques and instruments used reveals a world of ideas and sounds that still inspires. Hainbach has plundered the electronic music of the 20th century for a good decade now, and has repurposed it for a modern audience both on his YouTube channel, live audiences and as software instruments. In his talk he will give a look into his latest discoveries from a living and breathing past.
