Director | Hologramica
As one of the first moving light technicians in the world, I took my first steps into an industry that culminated in a career as an award-winning Lighting Designer, Creative Director and Technical Production Manager.
On the way up, I was privileged to spend many years on the road with many of the world's greatest artists at their peak: Elton John, Metallica, Guns 'N' Roses, Depeche Mode to name a few, on a career path which culminated in many years designing for Robbie Williams, whose record-breaking Knebworth performances are still among the largest audiences ever in the UK. Somewhere along the way I also devised the signature lighting moves for Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, pretty much unchanged to this day, and squeezed in some musical theatre on The Lion King.
The search for a show-stopping effect for Robbie brought holograms onto my radar, and I was quickly hooked on the exacting mix of technical precision and creative vision required to make the impossible look effortless. I incorporated Hologramica in 2009 so I could deliver large projects. Since then, I've seen a whirlwind of activity across the event spectrum - a producer on a full-length Whitney Houston hologram concert tour; designed fashion shows for Burberry and Massimo Dutti; helped Under Armour and Vans launch new products. General Motors' Lunar Rover is stuck on the moon, so we sent its hologram to China instead, while a whole holographic orchestra took to the stage at Geneva Art show...
In 2016 I invented 3D Holonet, a high quality holographic screen. I wanted a product that was robust enough for the rigours of music touring, and Holonets have been toured by artists as diverse as Girls Aloud, Avenged Sevenfold, The Prodigy and Steven Wilson, delighting and amazing fans across the world. I was incredibly proud of my invention when it was awarded a patent in 2023 (EP3446179).
3D Holonet continues to evolve, and I still learn something new about it every day. Hologramica dry-sells Holonets, but some clients prefer us to come on site, particularly on complex projects. I love getting involved, guiding creative minds to allow their imaginations to let rip. Good lighting is an essential component of a great hologram, and I'm grateful for my years behind a lighting desk for the skills and experience I gained.
I'm looking forward to a future where more people understand holograms and want to use them. They're just video after all, so perhaps not as big a mystery as some people might think. It would be lovely to see this extraordinary technology become ordinary technology, enjoyed by all.
